PTC Tip of the Month
PTC Books

Here are some options if you want to buy books on PTC for your library. In 2004, PTC Communications will publish the book "Industrial Phase-Transfer Catalysis" by Halpern, Sirovski and Crick. It will be the first book on industrial PTC and it will be announced on the PTC Tip of the Month. Other PTC books which we use at PTC Organics include: "Phase-Transfer Catalysis: Fundamentals, Applications and Industrial Perspectives" by Starks, Liotta and Halpern (Chapman and Hall 1994; this is the #1 selling PTC book); "Quaternary Ammonium Salts" by Jones (Elsevier Science 2000; this is a new book with many procedures but little or no theory or guidelines); "Handbook of Phase-Transfer Catalysis" a collection of 16 very good essays edited by Sasson and Neumann (Kluwer 1997); "Phase Transfer Catalysis: Selected Problems and Applications" by Goldberg (Gordon and Breach 1992);  "Phase-Transfer Catalysis" by Dehmlow and Dehmlow (VCH 1993; this book has a lot of references) and the Fluka Compendium of PTC reactions in three volumes edited by Weber which covers thousands of PTC references through 1989.

PTC Seminar via the Web & Telephone October 1, 2003

PTC Organics will conduct the PTC seminar entitled "Reducing Cost of Manufacture of Organic Chemicals Using Phase-Transfer Catalysis" on October 1, 2003 at 09:00 US eastern standard time. The seminar will be conducted using the internet and your telephone and can be accessed from anywhere in the world. Register by contacting Marc Halpern at tel 856-222-1146 (US) or by E-mail to receive your password, telephone number to call and other instructions.

Registration is free before September 1, 2003 and is limited to one access point per site (it is recommended that you use a speakerphone and projector connected to your computer for multiple participants). A total of 20 access points will be available. Preference will be given to multi-participant access points. PTC Organics reserves the right to determine the participating companies which will be selected from the industrial customers or potential industrial customers of PTC Organics.

PTC Reaction of the Month Phosgene reaction in the presence of water

Here is another example of using phosgene in the presence of water at a basic pH while achieving high yield by McCloskey, P.; Burnell, T.; Brunelle, D.; Shanklin, E.; Smigelski, P.; Kailasam, G.; (General Electric) US Patent 6,420,588, July 16, 2002. In the past, we have reviewed other GE patents which use PTC to significantly reduce excess phosgene by replacing the use of triethylamine catalyst with phase-transfer catalysis. There are hundreds of PTC reactions which use water-sensitive compounds in the presence of water and if you would like to achieve high yield using water-sensitive compounds and low excess reactant, please contact PTC Organics by E-mail, website, telephone (+1 856-222-1146) or fax (+1 856-222-1124).

PTC Breakthrough Process Screening

PTC Organics offers PTC Breakthrough Process Screening for rapid and highly effective evaluation of breakthrough phase-transfer catalysis processes. As the world leader in industrial phase-transfer catalysis, PTC Organics develops breakthrough high-performance low-cost PTC processes. Contact Marc Halpern at PTC Organics by E-mail, website, telephone (+1 856-222-1146) or fax (+1 856-222-1124).

Before performing any PTC reactions read this important message
Organic chemical reactions are inherently dangerous. Moreover, phase-transfer catalysis may provide rate and other enhancements which can intensify associated hazards. Under no circumstances should anyone perform any procedure on any scale based in whole or in part on any of the contents of this E-mail before thoroughly establishing safe operating procedures and performing a full and competent hazardous operations analysis with the participation of qualified technical personal trained in chemical, engineering, safety, industrial hygiene and environmental disciplines and sciences.

Policy
The list of PTC Tip of the Month subscribers will not be sold, rented or transferred and will be used only by PTC Communications, Inc. and PTC Organics, Inc. to provide information related to Phase-Transfer Catalysis.
